Five on Friday

For the month of May you probably noticed a few of my blog posts have included the #BEDM hashtag. Well like I mentioned earlier in the week I was supposed to be taking part in Elizabeth’s Blog everyday in May challenge, and well I kind of failed at it (rather well I might add).

So usually on a Friday I do my Friday Funnies posts, but I’m sure as you’ve gathered by now, this month has been a little different. So to continue my different theme (more like chaos and no theme at all) I’ll be linking up with The good life blog for Five on Friday.

This Five on Friday is all about the things that have made the past few days just magical.

The most delicious lunch at Licorish in Nicolway.

Fun times with a wonderful friend.

Driving to work and this is the scenery.

Went for slightly longer run one afternoon. Felt like I might die
but then the last stretch rewarded me with this view.

This Orchid is still alive and has plenty of flowers.
I might finally be getting the hang of Orchid care.

Starting next week I’ll return to my normal blogging routine, which means you have many many Friday Funnies to look forward to. I’ve been keeping them all stored up in my mail box.

On a side note, starting Sunday it’s officially my Birthday month (it’s the 18th). I expect lots of well wishes and presents coming my way (kidding).

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Onto the next challenge

In yesterday’s blog post I mentioned that I had a few exciting projects lined up for Mel’s Corner. Well today I’m going to let you in on one of those projects. Not too long ago I received a very exciting email, from the well i am challenge team, asking if I wanted to be a part of their challenge kicking off on the 1st of July?

At first I thought to myself, oh this is just another this is how you should workout and this is how you should train campaigns, but it’s actually an even better campaign than that. well i am takes a whole different approach to wellness. It’s 100 days focused at transforming your life and body into a healthy machine. Although you have to go for proper before-and-after assessment, the challenge itself doesn’t interfere with any existing fitness challenges/programs you may be currently busy with. Instead it aims to support whatever journey you're on.

What’s even better about this challenge is that when you register you get a Bosch Appliance, (depending on the package you select) Biogen products to the value of R250, 50% off all Reebok apparel online, and your very own custom-made, bespoke Health Box packed with extras valued at R300. Your pack will also include eating plans and training programmes from various industry experts, which you can access via the online Member's Locker.

It’s been just over a month since I completed the 100happydays challenge, and I was already looking for the next adventure when I found out about the well i am challenge, perfect timing I’d say. So who is going be joining me? It’s only a 100 days, I mean look how easy and fun the previous challenge was.

What's been happening

The beginning of this month I signed up for the #BEDM challenge and well I've failed at it, so badly! The first week went off without a hitch, I was so enthusiastic and then came the weekend, I got busy and well life happened. So I haven't exactly been keeping up with the challenge but I have tried to take part in a post here and there. Before I would have felt seriously guilty about not being 100% dedicated to the challenge but this time around I decided that all those days out and about, the me time, movie and series veg sessions with special or all the celebrations taking place lately, were just more important than a blog post or two.

No this doesn't mean I'm not dedicated to my blog anymore, if anything there has been SO much going on behind the scenes. This "little" corner is going places and all will be shared in due time (there's some really exciting projects and adventures lined up).

You might have noticed a few changes already, such as a few ads here and there. Yes, Mel's Corner is officially open for advertising. After receiving numerous requests from various people asking if they can advertise on my blog, I've finally caved, but don't worry I won't be bombarding you with boring deals and such things. Each and every ad will only be for things which I feel tie into my world and that which I would actually be interested in myself. So expect lots of clothes, cosmetics, travel, home decor, food and such things...lol.

I would also like to thank each and everyone of you for your continued support when it comes to this blog. The fact that you all keep coming back to read my posts means the absolute world to me. Oh and a heads up, this weekend I'm planning on baking something delicious, you'll want to keep your eyes open for that mouth watering recipe.

On a last note, the picture above is from my drive to work this morning. It was such a beautiful start to the day, that I just had to share it with all of you.

Workspace dreams #BEDM

If there is one thing I love doing it's building and organising my workspace. I get so inspired when I'm surrounded by a beautiful and well organised area for all my files, stationery, coloured paper, washi tape, buttons and my MacBook neatly resting amongst all of it. Right now I don't really have a designated workspace, mainly because I'm all over the show and not always in the same place when it comes to my blog. I do however have a board on Pinterest dedicated to future ideas for my workspace (I mean who does't). Some of my ideas, so far.

Can you tell I'm going through a bit of a white phase...lol.

Perks of being an adult #BEDM

Paying the bills, having a life cover policy, a pension fund, paying rent or a bond, working five days a week, buying food, cooking the food. These are all part of being an adult, and although we may get sick of it every now and again and think to ourselves "Really? This so so not what I signed up for." There are so many advantages to being an adult, in fact I think they outweigh the bad things (or the not so fun things). I mean let's just take a look at what's so spectacular about being an adult.

Going to work (if you love your job).
You get to drink wine (legally).
Spending your money on ridiculous things or saving it however you like.
You can stay up and watch that movie which only finishes at 12 o’ clock, on a week night.
Not having to wait for a ride, because you are your own ride.
Watching as much TV as you want.
Watching whatever you like on TV.
Choosing your own friends.
Traveling wherever and however you want.
Way less drama, because we’re all mature and reasonable now (well most of us).
Being in love.
Trying to achieve your goals and dreams.
Being able to vote.
Choosing to live almost anywhere you want.

Yes, being an adult is all it's cracked up to be an so much more. Take the above photo for
example, drinking a shot out of a syringe, it's a very adult thing to do (lol).

Best blogging tips #BEDM

When you start a blog, you have so many questions. From where do I begin, who do I aim my blog at, to what do I want to blog about? Unfortunately these questions never really end. The more you blog, the more questions you start to have; now that I've started where do I want to go, is this what I want to write about? You'll have times where you hate your blog, times where you love your blog, times when you can't get enough of blogging to times when all you want to do is give up.

The truth is each and every blogger has been there, whether they're willing to admit it or not. Over the years of blogging I have received so much advice. So today I'm going to share these tips with you and who knows, maybe they'll help that one blogger who is stuck in a rut.

Get ideas from your audience - don't be afraid to engage with others and ask them what they like to read about. It just might inspire an idea for a great DIY post or open the door to new interests.
Write for yourself  - don't write what everyone else is writing about. Write about stuff you're interested in. You'd be surprised how many people share the same interests.
Love your existing readers - blogging is not about the numbers. Appreciate and show appreciation for those who keep coming back to read your blog, post after post.
Be consistent - Whether you choose to blog everyday, once every two days or once a week, stick to it and be consistent about it.
Share the knowledge - learn't something new? Share it with your readers, think of all the people who shared their knowledge and how much it helped you.
Be truthful - go outside of the box and your comfort zone. Be honest, tell people about the good, bad and ugly of your life. People don't want to read about how "perfect" your life is.
Be yourself - just because everyone else is doing a certain theme or look with their blog doesn't mean you have to as well. The world is full of people trying to be like one another. So be that person who chooses to do something different.
Engage with other bloggers - reach out and talk to your fellow bloggers. It's not only a way to get people to notice your blog, but it's also a way to meet new people who share this blogging passion with you.
Write with personality - write your posts the way you want to read them and not as if they're from a perfect story book. Blogging is not suppose to be the perfect essays they all taught us about at school. It's a reflection of who you are as a person.

.......and before you ask, yes that is me in a box. Don't underestimate just how petite I really am (lol).

Home sweet home #BEDM

Today's post is titled, you guessed "Home Sweet Home." So instead of showing you photos of my house and what makes it so cosy and warm, I'm rather going to tell you what "Home," means to me.

Home is getting to spend the day in your PJs.
Home is driving down the road and singing to your favourite song.
Home is being with your friends.
Home is having the family around for a visit
Home is a glass of wine after a long day at work.
Home is that message you never expected to get.
Home is catching up with long lost friends.
Home is a phone call just to say hello.
Home is locking eyes with the one who makes you weak at the knees.
Home is time on the beach.
Home is waking up and realising you still have a time to snuggle down and get more sleep.
Home is dancing in the kitchen while making dinner.
Home is time on the couch when it's raining and you're watching your favourite show.
Home is discovering something new, something that inspires you each and everyday.

Yes, this is what home is to me. It's not a place but rather a feeling that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Beauty, fashion, grooming #BEDM

Today's post for the #BEDM challenge is a rather fun one and a topic which I'm very passionate about. I know I don't always blog about fashion (because let's face it there are enough fashion bloggers out there) and only every now and again do I blog about some of my awesome beauty tips and tricks. That's because I only like to share the ones which I have personally tried and tested, and I know are guaranteed to work. Now if you've been a reader of my blog for a while you'll know that when it comes to beauty tips and tricks, I tend to stick with stuff that can be done/made at home. That's because I like to know exactly what I'll be placing on my skin or hair.

One of my all time favourite beauty related things is face and hair masks, they're just so quick, easy and hassle free. A few of my personal favourites are:

Fancy face

Honey face

Beauty sharing

I mean who knew

Here in South Africa we're well into Autumn, so everyone is starting to dress a whole lot warmer for those chilly early mornings and evenings. It's still a beautiful temperature during the day but as soon as it gets to 4pm, out come the jerseys and jackets. Some of the things I'm really looking forward to wearing this winter are:

Layers: this is a no brainer for winter time, but this time it's more on trend than ever.

Monochrome: I've always loved to pair my blacks and whites

Oversized: Yes, finally being petite and having all your clothes be oversized is a trend.

Do you have any beauty tips? Or perhaps there is something fashion wise that you're looking forward to this season?

Walk to work #BEDM

Today's post for the #BEDM challenge is supposed to be about your walk/drive to work. Well unfortunately I didn't have a walk/drive to work today because I worked from home. So instead of my walk/drive to work I'll rather show you what I got up today....for work that is.

It started and continued with many cups of tea.
I checked and scheduled the Facebook posts for the day.

I used TweetDeck throughout the day to promote various campaigns
and check in with our readers.

Answered a few emails and spoke to some contributors.

Finished writing one of my pieces.
and I updated the website.

This in a nutshell is what I do everyday at work. It's a pretty awesome job I tell you.

Gadgets #BEDM

Technology what a wonderful thing. Sometimes I wonder where we would be without it, it certainly plays a big part in my daily life. What I love even more about technology is the gadgets. They make my life so easy. What I love even more about these gadgets of mine, is how they integrate with one another.

I can simply type some thing into the notes, calendar, contacts or email of either my MacBook, iPad or iPhone and voila it's automatically available on the other devices. The best part has to be the photo stream function. So when I'm out and about and I snap a happy photo, it's there for me to view on both my MacBook and iPad and it's saved in my "cloud" so if anything happens to any of these gadgets my personal stuff is saved.

Then there is of course all the amazing apps which I'm able to download. Snapseed, Pages, Instagram, Quizup and SoundCloud to name a few. Yes, technology it's a wonderful thing. Another thing which I love is if we're in the kitchen, cooking or baking up a storm, we're able to view the recipe and listen to live streaming music at the same time, and it's all from one gadget (iPad).

Incredible isn't it?

Now before you ask, this is not an Apple endorsed post, I'm just a very happy consumer (lol). So which gadgets are making your life easier?

Passion project #BEDM

When it comes to my life, there are a lot of things I'm passion about; cooking, baking, DIY projects, social media, writing, marketing, and the list goes on. So today's post won't be about my main passion but rather one of them, and that's to make accessories. It's also something I'd love to (in a dream world) be able to make money off of. I have however made a few of these lovelies for friends and family, either on request or as Birthday presents. So who knows, maybe there is an entrepreneurial venture there yet. Over the years I've made so many earrings, bracelets, rings, headbands and necklaces, some of which I've shown on my blog. Below are a few links of some of my favourite accessories I've made so far.

DIY bracelets

Braided headbands

Peacock necklace

DIY leather bracelets

Pearls and chains

Cinco de Mayo - Let's be Mexican #BEDM

Let's be Mexican, hmmm. To be honest I wouldn't know the first thing about being Mexican and Cinco de Mayo isn’t really something we celebrate here in South Africa. So today's post (Day 5 of #BEDM) is a bit of a tough one for me. I've been racking my brain the whole day about what on earth I'm going to write about. So when I could't think of anything, I naturally turned to recipes (it goes along with my slight cooking obsession).

Salsa Chicken
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
4 teaspoons taco seasoning mix
1 cup salsa
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons sour cream (optional)

Preheat oven to 190.
Place chicken breasts in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle taco seasoning on both sides of chicken breasts, and pour salsa over all.
Bake at 190 for 25 to 35 minutes, or until chicken is tender and juicy and its juices run clear.

Sprinkle chicken evenly with cheese, and continue baking for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Top with sour cream if desired, and serve.

Star Wars Day #BEDM

The 4th of May, or better yet known as Star Wars Day. That's the title for today's #BEDM post. So in honour of today, I've found a few animated Star Wars funnies....May the fourth be with you.

Weekend morning routine #BEDM

Weekends, we all love them. What's not to love, you get to sleep in a little, relax, spend time with friends and generally do just about anything you like. So when it comes to, today's posts I really had to think about it, because there is no routine when it comes to my weekend morning routine. Or at least I don't have a set one.

Saturday mornings are pretty much the same. There is a little bit of sleep in, which eventually leads to getting out of bed (it's getting a lot harder now with the drop in tempreture), a cup or two of coffee, scrambling up some breakfast, getting dressed and then running a few errands. Not the most exciting morning I know, but the point is to try and get it all done as soon as possible so that the rest of the day can be spent doing whatever. Which is usually meeting up with all the different friends. Sunday mornings, well those are lazy mornings. Usually getting dressed only happens way after 11am, unless there is a lunch or something to get to.

5 favourite posts #BEDM

For day two of the #BEDM challenge, we've been asked to pick five of our favourites posts (from our own blog that is). Picking just five is actually a lot harder than you think. I spent the most of last night scrolling through the few hundred posts I've written, and well honestly I have more than five but if it seriously has to be narrowed down, these are my top choices.

A responsible trip around Cape Town

Dirt cups

When bloggers meet up

I took a trip to paradise

100happydays update fourteen

What is your blog all about? #BEDM

Well I've done it again, I've joined another blog challenge. Just when you thought I was done with the last one. For the month of May I'll be taking part in the Blog everyday in May Challenge set aside by the amazing Elizabeth from Rosalilium.

The first post is titled: What is your blog all about? So what is Mel's Corner exactly? Well it's a personal lifestyle blog where I share my daily adventures, cooking recipes, baking experiences, DIY projects, accessory tutorials, fashion tips, beauty tricks, hidden treasures I've found and the travels I've done.

It's my own little online world where I also like to share positivity and things that inspire me in so many ways.
