The gym bunny lives on

I wrote a blog post not too long ago about joining the gym (I'm a gym bunny now) and getting back on track when it came to being fit. I recently completed the 'beginner' course that the gym had put together for me, so now I am doing a more strenuous and intense routine and boy oh boy is this routine tough. The first day after my new routine workout, I could barely walk properly, sitting was even an issue, I would just flop into my chair at work because bending down and sitting just hurt too much. People were more than likely laughing at me and how funny I must have looked shuffling all over the place, I know I certainly did have a few laughs at myself.

I do have to say though as much as I complain about it being hard and the pain I feel each day after the workout, looking at it now I am actually excited to continue with this routine. Yes it is going to be tough but in the long run I am going to feel so much better about myself and its going to give me such a sense of accomplishment. So just to give you an idea of what I will be going though, here are a few videos. These exercises are just for one of four days, as everyday has a different set of exercises.

Pack your bags and lets go

I have mentioned before that I love travelling, and although I have already visited so many different places (The travelling bug, Happy 4th of July and The happiest place on earth) there are so many places I would still like to go. I just love it all, the excitement of packing your bags, going to the airport, getting on the plane and arriving in a strange place where you build a lifetime of memories.

Now I realise by now that I am making all of this sound as if travelling abroad is always smooth sailing and there are never any hiccups. How we all wish that were true, but at the end of the day all those hiccups are part of the adventure and afterwards they make for great stories.

Bali…hmm I can just see myself lounging on the beach and drinking a cocktail.

Greece appeals to me because of the history, culture and the architecture.

Tuscany, ever since I saw the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, I have wanted to visit this beautiful place.

Handy make-up tricks

What not many people know about me is that before I went and studied my degree, I did a course in Make-up and Beauty. Although I did already know the basics when it came to make up and how to apply and wear it, the course did give me some handy tips.

How to make your eyes appear bigger: Do not use the usual black or dark brown eyeliners as this narrows your eyes. Use a coloured liner, such as blue, pink or green along the top eyelid (this defines your eyes). Lastly take a white shimmer eye shadow along the inner corners of the eyes (in a V shape). Don’t forget to curl your eyelashes, as this will bring them closer to your eyebrows and make your eye area more wide.

How to create plush lips: Apply a shimmery but colourless lip balm to the skin directly above your cupids bow, this trick makes it look as if your lips are larger and more voluptuous.

The illusion of perfect skin:  Use a concealer brush to apply cover-up to pimples, be sure to make short quick motions with the brush. A brush is recommended because it can reach more into the grooves of a pimple than a finger or sponge.

More defined cheekbones: Use a highlighting powder and bronzer; be sure they are two shades darker than your skin tone. Suck in your cheeks as if you are trying to make a fish face and apply the bronzer along the hollow spots, then smile and apply the highlighter to your cheeks.

A narrower nose: Apply your foundation as you normally would and then take a highlighter and brush it lightly down the bridge of your nose. Apply translucent powder to set the look.

Neighbourgoods Saturdays

Everyone loves the weekend, you get to sleep in, you don’t have to worry about getting enough sleep for work the next day and you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. With the warmer weather now upon us there are so many more things to do when it comes to  the weekend.

One thing I enjoy doing is going to the Neighbourgoods Market in Johannesburg on Saturdays, it has such a nice vibe and the yummiest selection of food I have ever seen. If food isn’t really your thing though, there are clothes, jewellery and various other crafty things for sale as well. So if you’re stuck as what to do on a Saturday I highly recommend this as your next outing.

Summer styling

I can smell it, it’s there when I wake up in the morning and it’s there when I get home in the afternoon, that’s right it’s the smell of Spring! Oh how I love the warmer months, the birds are always singing, I’m able to wear my summer dresses and everyone just seems to be a whole lot friendlier.

When it comes to Summer fashion, I can always be found in a pair of cute shorts, a bright flowing summer dress or a printed skirt; one could even say these are my ‘hot’ items. Don’t get me wrong though, I like winter as well because I get to wear beautiful scarves and gorgeous boots, but I am a true summer child at heart.

I am so excited for Summer to arrive that I even had a shop at Mr Price online (bad for the bank balance but good for the wardrobe). They have such beautiful dresses and skirts in store for Summer that I am counting down the days until I get to wear my new purchases. Some of the items I bought:

Your purchases arrive wrapped up in this bright bag!

Can I have my own reality show as well

These days when you turn on the TV, all you seem to be faced with is reality show after reality show. Now don’t get me wrong, I like reality shows as much as the next person but at some point I want to watch an actual TV show, like Revenge or Once Upon a Time.

When it comes to reality shows there are the Emmy nominated shows, such as Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway and So You Think You Can Dance and then of course there are the not so Emmy nominated shows, such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Mrs Eastwood and Company (new to our screens) and Married to Jonas. At this stage it feels like anybody and everybody is given their own reality show. I have a pet rabbit that grunts, does that mean can I have my own show as well?

When discussing reality shows, everyone is quick to defend “Oh I don’t watch any of that nonsense,” yet everyone always seems to know exactly what is going on in the different character’s lives. I will admit it, I watch some reality shows (it’s my guilty pleasure in life).

One that I have recently started watching is BBC’s The Only Way is Essex, I don’t know if it’s the way they talk (“oh shut up”), the loads of makeup and outfits they wear or the fact that in the first episode I watched they were discussing Vajazzling (that alone was both hilarious and just plain weird) but something about this show has caught my attention.

It then leaves little to wonder as to why these types of shows are creeping up left right and centre, because producers have found a way to make loads of money and push TV into a whole new area.

Hold it to your nose and it smells like a rose

I am the type of girl, that when I walk into the duty free section at the airport I want to go smell all the different type of perfumes. I am however also the type of girl, that gets bored easily with just one scent. So when it comes to my perfume I like to change it up a little and wear a different one each day. At the moment I have a top five of perfumes that I absolutely love, they are:

Versace Bright Crystal

Flora by Gucci

Miracle by LancĂ´me

Lacoste Touch of Pink

Nina by Nina Ricci

I find the best way to test if a perfume really works for you is to spray a small amount onto your hand, walk around in the shop a little and then smell it. This way the perfume has had a decent amount of time to settle on your skin and you will smell its true fragrance.

The happiest place on earth

When I look back at my childhood I have such fond memories of watching various Disney movies, pretending to be characters from some of the movies and then there is the time we went to Disney World.

Not many people can say that they have been to Disney World and I am so blessed in that I can say I have been more than once (well once to Disney World in Orlando Florida and to Disney Land in Hong Kong).

When my sister and I were younger my parents decided that they wanted to take us to Disney World. It took a lot of saving and planning on their part, but in the June holidays of 1995 we were off to Disney world. The trip overseas included a stop in London and some of America, see my Happy 4th of July post for more details.

We spent a magical 11 days in Disney World; it was the best holiday I can remember from when I was child. I only hope that one day I can go back and experience it all over again.

It so happened that when my parents moved to Hong Kong in 2009, we were fortunate enough to be able to go to their Disney Land.

My love affair with clothes

Its safe to say I am a complete fashion junkie. I love trying different styles, I don't have one specific dress sense. I am always looking online, in magazines and in the shops for new ideas of outfits to try and out together.

I can spend hours on end planning outfits and browsing my favourite fashion blogs and websites for ideas. I follow various fashion magazines, houses and personalities on Twitter as well. I even have a board on Pinterest dedicated to clothing.

These are a few of the blogs I love to look at for some inspiration.

The fashionable body is due for a change
and over the years has encountered a range
of shapes and sizes dictated by trends
because the quest for vogue never ends!

Rings, rings and more rings

I absolutely love rings; you could almost go as far as saying I’m a little obsessed. Over the years I have collected 20 different rings. This collection is made up of rings I have bought here in South Africa, on trips over seas and old antique rings that my family were no longer interested in having.

I have a very particular taste when it comes to the type of rings I like. I prefer silver rings (gold just does not look good with my skin tone) but the rings are never plain. They either have a coloured stone(s) or the bands are twisted or have some strange pattern on them.

Olympic Fun

So as everyone is well aware the Olympics are currently taking place. I don’t know about you but I have been having so much fun watching all the different events and athletes compete in their relevant sports.

My favourite sports to watch are gymnastics, swimming, diving, tennis, trampoline and athletics. Below are some fun facts about the Summer and Winter Olympics for you.

The South African Olympic Team

The United States has won more medals (2,189) at the Summer Games than any other country.

Up until 1994 the Olympics were held every four years. Since then, the Winter and Summer games have alternated every two years.

Three continents – Africa, South America, and Antarctica – have never hosted an Olympics.

The Summer Olympic sports are archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, canoe / kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon (shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping, and running), mountain biking, rowing, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, triathlon (swimming, biking, running), volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, and wrestling.

The Winter Olympic sports are alpine skiing, biathlon (cross-country skiing and target shooting), bobsled, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined (ski jumping and cross-country skiing), skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating.

Each of the Olympic rings represents a different region of the world and each ring is a colour to represent the flags of the nations in that region.

The Olympic gold medals haven't been made out of solid gold since 1912. They must, however, be plated with six grams of gold, but the rest of the composites in the medals are left up to the host city to determine. The silver medals also have strict composition requirements.
